17-year-old Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) dreams of escaping her hometown of Sacramento, California. During her final year in high school, she deals with the challenges of teenage life: romance, a part-time job, college applications. Meanwhile, Lady Bird’s relationship with her mother Marion (Metcalf) grows increasingly tense: they each have very different views on Lady Bird’s plans after graduation.
The solo directorial debut of Greta Gerwig is an absolute delight: a funny, warm-hearted and honest account of a year in the life of one American teenager. This coming-of-age tale is brought to life by some of the finest performances of the year: Ronan and Metcalf are superb, with excellent support from the likes of Tracy Letts and Lucas Hedges.
