Jake and Kyra Fleming are a married couple who purchase a life-like robotic sibling named Yang for their adoptive daughter Mika. Over the years, Yang becomes part of the family. When Yang shuts down unexpectedly, Jake sets out to have the robot fixed. As it becomes clear this will be no easy repair job, Jake is handed a device apparently containing Yang’s memory files. The family soon discovers that those videos reveal unexpected secrets about his past life and deepest desires.
Kogonada’s beautiful second feature elegantly uses sci-fi ideas to create a graceful, moving drama about family, loss, grief and identity. Colin Farrell leads an exemplary cast, turning in one of the best and most understated performances of his career.
