STONE STORIES AND OIL ON WATER

AN EXHIBITION OF VISUAL ART BY FERN WRIGHT

FERN WRIGHT

I was born and bred on the Black Mountains on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons in Wales. I received a Bachelor of Arts(honours) degree from Dartington College of Arts in the UK as well as a postgraduate diploma in glass technique and technology from Brierley Hill International Glass School. I worked as a glass artist and artists assistant in a number of studios and glass schools across the world.

I found my way home to the beautiful countryside of Ireland thirteen years ago. My ancestors originate from the stunning Wicklow mountains and the craggy beaches of county Cork.

I have recently reinvented myself, rediscovered my roots as a fine artist and returned to my art practice after a busy number of years raising a young family and supporting my husband in his career as a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the Irish Coastguard. My painting compliments my lifestyle and my deep love of the natural environment which surrounds us.
The rich beauty of our Celtic coastline and mountains have inspired my current work. The ethereal mists that hang in the hills and caress the ever changing edges on our land soften sharp lines and blur boundaries between the elements.

My painting process is tactile using oil paints on canvas. I paint using gathered images from much loved country rambles, visual connection and emotional memory.

My rock pool paintings are my most recent work. Each pool is a unique universe as complex and detailed as any wide landscape or craggy sea view. The colours within each little pool are incredibly rich and succulent. As the stone is submerged under water it changes into a cornucopia of shades, light and dark lifting the language of the minerals to another level. Tiny plants and animals live out microscopic existences in an inverted solar system filled with colour. The silence of the pools juxtapose agains a festival of visual stimulus. Each pool from different corners of our land hold complex stories alive, evolving and original.

Gallery viewing opening hours: 11-5pm Monday to Friday and during shows.
