Christine Scarry – Writer in Residence

The Watergate Theatre is delighted to announce that Christine Scarry will join us as Writer in Residence for the second half of 2021.

A Dublin native, now resident in Kilkenny, Christine Scarry is a theatre director, vocal coach, performer and educator.  She is Artistic Director of Red Alchemy Theatre Company & Voice Studio, Musical Director of the female vocal sextet, Alchemy, and Owner of The Voice Industry.  Christine has worked with national and international casts on a range of productions at home and abroad, and has over 25 years’ experience crafting and training voices for stage, studio and screen.

She is a member and authorised coach at Vocology in Practice, a global network of voice experts who are at the forefront of vocal health, science and pedagogy.

During her residency Christine will explore the letters, photographs, family anecdotes and history of her mother, Teresa O’Neill.

This exploration will examine the mother daughter relationship and, in tandem, the story of migration, displacement, isolation, resilience, survival and drive of a woman during a time where social paralysis and war tried but failed to disable the immutable triumph of a creative spirit.

‘After her death, when sorting through my mother’s belongings, I discovered a cache of diaries and letters. They revealed the events which my mother endured in childhood and which taught her the hard truths of life. While reading these precious sources I learned that in life, my mother overcame her experiences and used them as a fuel. The result was her knowledge, courage, grace, resilience and a drive to empower her daughters to have a better life than her own.’
