There is a great volunteering tradition within theatre and, as a non-profit organisation, the Watergate Theatre has been welcoming Front of House Volunteers from all walks of life, to help provide a theatre experience to the Kilkenny wider community since 1993. Volunteers are crucial to the smooth and successful running of the Theatre and they are at the very heart of the Watergate Theatre family.
Who can be a Front of House Volunteer?
If you are aged 18+, have a warm, enthusiastic and welcoming attitude and enjoy meeting and helping people, you will fit right in at the Watergate. As the public face of the Theatre, it is important that you have a smart appearance and are respectful to patrons. Other desirable qualities include good spoken English, a professional but welcoming manner, an interest in theatre or the arts and good timekeeping. Volunteers are contacted through a WhatsApp group, so you need to have this app downloaded onto your smartphone.
What does a Front of House Volunteer do?
Front of House Volunteers usually carry out the role of Usher. Arriving 30 minutes before the show starts, they help meet and greet our patrons and be the welcoming face of the Watergate Theatre. Duties include:
- checking or giving out tickets
- showing customers to their seats
- assisting with customer queries or directing them to the appropriate member of staff
- being a physical presence in the theatre during the show and liaising with the Front of House Supervisor should any issues arise
- assisting with the evacuation procedure in the event of an emergency evacuation
- assisting with Front of House duties during intervals and at the end of the show
What are the benefits of becoming a Watergate Volunteer?
- You can learn and develop new skills in the area of customer service and learn about the theatre and arts industry, gaining useful experience for your CV.
- It gives you opportunities to meet lots of wonderful like-minded people and make new friends.
- You become an integral part of the Front of House team, enabling events to run smoothly.
- Regular volunteers receive complimentary tickets (conditions apply).
- It is a great chance for you to give something back to your community.
You are free to choose the shows that suit your schedule (please note the majority of shows are on weekend evenings and Volunteers are usually required to stay for the duration of the show).
Training & Induction
The Watergate provides Front of House induction, training and ongoing support to its Volunteers. Once you are established as a Front of House Volunteer, there may be opportunities to develop your role within the Watergate and receive formal training/accreditation.
“I’ve been a volunteer with the Watergate for close to a decade now. I really enjoy it and would definitely recommend it. Being part of the volunteer team has exposed me to different genres of theatre that I might not otherwise have been able to experience. I love the work and I get to see some of the best theatre in the country as a reward for doing something that I love. It’s a win-win.“ Sabine
“I started volunteering a year ago. I am new to Ireland and Kilkenny, so I became a volunteer to meet new people. Everybody involved with the Watergate Theatre helped make me feel welcome, and I have made new friends. I now feel like I am part of the community.” Sean
“I have been a volunteer at the Watergate Theatre for 8 years now. The sense of family in the Watergate is second to none with each person working towards the same goal, to provide a community theatre for all to enjoy.” Delia
“I have been volunteering for the Watergate for 10 years. I look forward to doing Front of House as I love meeting new people and making sure they are happy before a show. The staff are very friendly and I love being part of the volunteer team.” Ailish
“I’ve been volunteering at the Watergate for about a year, and I absolutely love it. I’m a great fan of music and theatre, and it makes me happy to see the look of anticipation on the faces of people as they take their seats for a show and the lights begin to dim, and also the buzz and chatter as the audience leave. I enjoy the craic with the other volunteers as we are happy to be part of such a great local hub of entertainment, showcasing plays, music and dance. Love it. Love it. Love it!” Ann
“l started as FOH volunteer 8+ years ago. l really like theatre, the social aspect of volunteering and getting to see a variety of productions. l have to say, it’s been a privilege.” Sheila
“I’ve been volunteering for about 6 months, after being told about it by another volunteer. I love it – meeting people and seeing great theatre.” Brigid
